A review of thirteen studies looking at the use of hypnotherapy in the treatment of chronic pain disorders found it to be consistently effective, and more so than physical therapy. Isn't that interesting?
The study also found that the approaches used were varied and it was difficult to make recommendations as to what works. Those interested in reading the original paper can find it here.
My clinical experience has taught me that supporting the person with images that bring comfort and relaxation is a good initial approach. Once some relief is achieved, it is appropriate to go deeper into the origins of the pain. How does the pain relate to the person's story? Is it a symbol for psychological pain, for hurtful memories? Has the sufferer been betrayed, abandoned, or does the pain allow her to escape a task that has become too difficult to undertake? Does it relate to fear of dying? Once those wounds are healed, physical pain can finally stop screaming for attention and let go of its grip.
Chronic pain is complex, but definitely not hopeless.
