The idea of caring for another being, no matter what species, is always scary at first. It requires being responsible and committed! Being there and being on time for the other, interpreting what he/she is trying to say, learning to read what behaviours mean, providing nutritious food, allowing time for exercise and relaxation… all of that indeed takes time and attention.
Only when you decide to be responsible and committed, do you have access to smitten love, gratitude and reciprocity. And when that happens, your heart expands, a smile invades your face, and you thrive on unlimited cuddles.
Rewards are the key to perpetuating the behaviours you wish for. First of all, you must be clear about what you want. Then, when the desired behavior happens, you must jump up and down, scream “good boy, good boy” as you enthusiastically hug the other, and if species appropriate, offer a delicious morsel to the achiever. Not only does this tactic guarantee that the behaviour will be repeated, but it also leaves you feeling ecstatic.
Punishment, on the hand, is not much fun for anyone.
When you love someone, greet them with a happy run to the door, dance around them whenever possible, snuggle with them in the bean bag and, if socially acceptable, give them a good lick on the face.
